What helps
The first impulse is often to understand: what happened, who is hurt, what should be done. They do not have to supply that account in order to deserve you being there. One more question can sound like an investigation.
A short message, with no 'at least' and no explanation, is often enough. A specific offer — a ride, a meal — can be made, and refused. You do not decide for them what they need.
In the days after, you come back without asking for the report. Later, you do not conclude that it is behind them. If the date returns, it is marked with a sentence. It is not retold.
Concrete example
"I'm here. You don't have to tell me anything."
Key takeaway
- Presence first. The facts, only if they come from them.
- A concrete offer is worth more than a string of questions.
Try next time
If someone has just been through a shock, send one sentence with no question — and an offer they can refuse.
